Microsoft refuses a documentation fix because AI might not understand text in tables
제목은 살짝 낚시 같은데, 맥락은 다르지 않습니다.
사건은 마이크로소프트에서 운영하는 WSL 문서 저장소에 문서에 대한 수정 요청이 들어옵니다(24년 9월 15일). 원래 문서 내에 .wslconfig와 wsl.conf를 비교하는 간단한 목록 설명이 있는데 이를 표로 깔끔하게 변경하자는 것입니다.
뭐 당연히 검토자가 확인하고 필요한 수정이 아니라면 거절할 수도 있습니다.
마이크로소프트의 시니어 콘텐츠 매니저 Matt Wojciakowski는 지난 12월 17일 아래와 같은 이유로 수정을 거절합니다.
Thanks for the contribution here and appreciate your attention to detail. We have decided to keep as-is.. part of that decision is that more and more folks are using AI chat to access guidance and tables don't always translate well in that context.
내용 자체에 대한 문제가 아니라 AI 기반 챗봇이 표 형식의 데이터를 잘 처리하지 못하기 때문에 거절한다는 내용입니다(물론 나중에 그런 의도가 아니었다고 변명을 하긴 했지만).
이야기는 커지고 커져 AI 논쟁으로 번져가는 분위기라서 대화를 닫으려 했지만 이미 늦어버렸죠. 결국에는 Matt Wojciakowski가 하루가 지난 12월 18일 변경 일부를 수용하고 병합했습니다.

아마도 Matt Wojciakowski는 문서 내에서 비순서 목록으로도 충분히 독자에게 설명이 된다고 생각했고 그런 이유로 거절을 한 것인데(테크니컬 라이터는 은근히 문서 형식에 대한 고집이 있습니다), AI 이야기를 곁들이면서 논쟁이 만들어진 것 같습니다.
새해 소식은 아니지만(이런 걸 12월에 올렸어야죠~~) 흥미로운 이야기라 기록으로 남겨봅니다.

국내에서 많은 기업들이 사용하고 있는 매뉴얼 솔루션 매뉴얼웍스가 6.0 버전을 출시했습니다.
개인적으로 인상적인 부분은 OpenAI 연동 부분이네요. 해외의 문서 작성 도구에 비하면 아주 기본적인 기능만 연동하는 수준이지만 앞으로 문서 작성 도구가 어떻게 변해가는지 지켜볼 수 있는 점이기도 합니다. 뭐 물론 이것도 다 돈이 드는 일이긴 하지만요.

(신간) 와인버그에게 배우는 차곡차곡 글쓰기
신간이지만 국내에 처음 소개된 책은 아닙니다. 2016년 에이콘 출판사에서 "제럴드 와인버그의 글쓰기책 - 돌담 속에 숨겨진 글쓰기 비법을 찾아서"라는 제목으로 출판된 적이 있구요. 아마도 번역서 계약기간이 끝나고 인사이트에서 출판하기로 한 모양입니다. 최근 와인버그의 책은 대부분 인사이트에서 번역되어 소개되고 있습니다.
원서 "Weinberg on Writing: The Fieldstone Method"는 2005년에 나온 책입니다. 저자 제럴드 와인버그는 지난 2018년 세상을 떠나셔서 책을 읽다가 궁금한 점이 생겨도 물어볼 수는 없습니다.

구글, 마이크로소프트 등에서 개발자로 일하다가 독립한 Michael Lynch이 쓴 글입니다. 나중에 책으로 펴낼 예정이며 그 중 한 챕터를 공개한 것이라고 하네요. 내용이 짧고 명확하게 정리되어 있어 많은 공감을 받고 있습니다.

11월 말에 끝난 행사인데 2달이 다 되어가도록 소식이 없네요. 다른 분들도 궁금했는지 질문을 남겼는데, 이제 거의 작업이 끝나간다고 합니다. 뭔가 중간에 일정 문제가 있었나 보네요.

요즘은 "Next.js 보다 빠른" 이라는 키워드가 어느 정도 먹히나 봅니다. 그만큼 Next.js 성능에 대한 불만이 많다는 이야기죠.
사용자 입장에서는 그닥 차이가 없어 보이긴 하지만 복잡한 구조에서는 간결함을 유지할 수 있다는 것이 중요할 듯합니다.
하지만 안정적인 서비스도 중요하기 때문에 쉽게 전환할 수 있는 문제는 아닙니다.

Society for Technical Communication (STC) shutting down
어제 공식 웹사이트를 통해 발표했습니다.

뭐, 이런 저런 이유들이 있는데 결국에는 회원수 감소로 인한 재정적인 문제로 활동을 중단한다고 합니다.
(STC는 2000년대 초반 회원수가 2만5천명 정도였는데, 최근 4천5백명까지 줄었다고 합니다. 주된 수익원이 회비, 컨퍼런스 참가비 등인데 회원이 줄면서 컨퍼런스 참가도 줄어들고 이런 저런 영향이 있었나 봅니다. tekom Europe 같은 경우 회원수가 약 9천5백명 정도인데, 비슷한 규모를 계속 유지하고 있다고 합니다. STC가 산업 전체에 걸친 테크니컬 커뮤니케이션을 다룬다면 tekom의 경우 소프트웨어 쪽 비중이 높아서 그런 것인지도 모르겠습니다).
정확한 일정은 발표하지 않았습니다만

Dear Members, Stakeholders, and Friends,
Despite significant efforts over the past several years by the various Boards of Directors and STC leadership, financial liabilities coupled with falling membership numbers have created a situation where we are not able to offer the education, resources, and outreach that this membership expects and deserves. Various cost-cutting measures and attempts to generate revenue have not been sufficient, and our debt and operational expenses now outweigh our ongoing revenue.
After an exhaustive look at finances and extensive research and discussion with the organization’s legal counsel, we have decided to dissolve the organization. The Board approved a motion to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy and secured a bankruptcy attorney to draft the required paperwork and submit it to the court on STC’s behalf.
Effective immediately, STC will permanently close its doors and cease all activities. This includes, but is not limited to, membership renewals and new member applications, elections, education programs (including conferences), certification courses and exams, committee and subcommittee activities, recognitions, awards, competitions, publications, and financial activities. This also applies to all Chapter, Special Interest Group (SIG) and Community of Interest (COI) activities including, but not limited to, events (virtual and in-person), activities, elections, council meetings, and all financial transactions.
Community and chapter leaders will receive further communication on closure activities directly from the bankruptcy trustee once assigned. The trustee will also provide direction to those owed money from the organization. We will update the STC.org website to reflect these communications.
Questions will be collected at info@stc.org and shared with the trustee.
Shuttering an organization as old as ours is painful. So many of us are deeply invested in STC. Thank you for advancing the profession with us.
